Tennyson is well known as one of the most representative
Victorian poets who guide and edify the public. But he could not atisfy the only role as a spokesman to his age whom the societywanted. His natural bent was for intensely personal expressions. He perpetually had troubles with these two impulses and tried to find a solution in Poems, Chiefly Lyrical(1830), Poems(1832), and Poems(1842). In some poems, the conflict seems to be resolved, but it is only superficial and it still remains in his heart without reconciliation. Finally, the tension between the two forces is resolved in In Memorian(1850). In this anthology, Tennyson recovered from the sorrow of his close friend’s death and attained the growth of the self by writing poems. Furthermore, he accepted the poet’s role and declared himself as a public leader. And so for him, writing poems was the very medium of self-recovery. I examined this process from the perspective of the Humanities Therapy.
